I'm not sure what the gnu ar does differently to handle longer file
member names. The portable archive format has been steady for some
time, and I think the only provision for names longer than 16 bytes
is the cheesy "strings table" hack used on Solaris. Perhaps GNU
jumped on the bandwagon.
