[p4perl] Compiling p4perl for p4d ver. 2001/.1

Hi,

I am trying to compile p4perl ver 3.4804 on a Linux
machine. We use Perforce server ver. 2001.1 on Solaris
8.

I understand that I need to use a recent version of
Perforce API to compile P4Perl successfully.

My question is:

As our Perforce server is an older version, is there a
danger? That is, will p4perl update the db with
entries that can be understood by recent versions of
Perforce, but not the older releases?
