[p4python] Building P4Python on Mac OS X 10.5.5 (Intel)

I am having trouble building P4Python on Mac OS X 10.5.5, Intel. Before
posting here I've searched the archives and found some similar but dated
issues - they seem to address a slightly different symptom. Tried the
solutions suggested within, but they did not work for me.

These are the packages I am using:
ftp://ftp.perforce.com/perforce/r08.2/bin.darwin80x86_64/p4api.tgz
ftp://ftp.perforce.com/perforce/r08.2/tools/p4python.tgz

I've configured setup.cfg to point to the C++ API directory. Running
"python setup.py build" yields some warnings but no errors (see attached
log). Upon running the recommended test, "python p4test.py", I get the
following error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "p4test.py", line 6, in <module>
    import P4
  File "build/lib.macosx-10.5-i386-2.5/P4.py", line 209, in <module>
    import P4API
