[p4] Question about percents in client spec

I had a client spec that had this in the view:

 	//depot/NSG/KG-250.2/main/Software/Code/* //jsmall_build0/*

I copied the spec using

client -t oldspec newspec

and the result came out as

 	//depot/NSG/KG-250.2/main/Software/Code/%%1 //jsmall_build0/%%1

I was able to change it to an asterick but I don't know what the %%1 
means. Anyone?
