[p4] is there way to cause "p4 edit" to automatically sync toheadfirst?

That may be true, but I can easily imagine the P4WSAD interface handling
this entire situation (i.e. a flag in the config screen enabling the
feature, and the feature be simply to provide user with options whenever
an obsolete file checkout occurs to sync none, sync one or sync all)...

This may not be appropriate for this forum, but WTF. It's been my
experience that the big problem with eclipse is that it has no
wherewithall for being able to translate the stdout or stderr of a
subordinate process into something useful by an eclipse user without
some
sort of extrordinary non-portable effort.
