The thing I haven't seen anyone discuss in the other responses is that the
TeamTrack ID and the changelist number really aren't the same thing from a
process perspective.

There are lots of different terms for the things I'm about to discuss. I'll
use terms that convey their functional purpose. Map them to your own
vocabulary as appropriate.

If you break down the change process, there are issues (things that users
report), change requests (what you decide to do about it), and changes
(things you do toward the goal of what you decided to do). There are
many-to-many relationships between issues and change requests and between
change requests and changes. Many organizations ignore the distinction
between issues and change requests as a reasonable optimization.

Perforce jobs are change requests and can serve as issues if you don't make
the distinction. Functionally, your TeamTrack IDs should map to jobs, not
changes. There's a lot of deeper discussion that can be provided on
changelist numbering, ordering, issue/change request process, etc. Jeff
Bowles addressed part of that in his response. The bottom line is that they
are not the same thing and should not be merged except in the simplest of
environments.

Subject: [p4] customization of changeset number

Hi All,
I am new to perforce and it is my first post. I am wondering, whether it
is possible to customize the changeset
  number?

We are using teamtrack for long time and teamtrack id is something like
000024689, we are planning to migrate
  SCM to perforce.
My question is upon submit, perforce gives changeset number like 15 or 16,
but my teamtrack id is what I wanted
to be changeset number. Is it possible to customize?

thanks and regards,
Sam
