Thank you Robert and Anand. At first during my cursory log check I missed out the error. Later when the Perforce Support person asked me to check it again, I found that my DB version had slipped from 6 to 5. I had reinstalled Perforce Server 2003.1. I think initially my system had 2002.1 and we had upgraded to 2003.1. So during an uninstall and reinstall the DB upgrade didnt happen and that could have resulted in the error. I ran the p4d -r . -xu command from my root and things worked fine. I spend around 5 to 6 hrs to figure this out. Initially it could have been due to an erroneous PORT environment configuration as I had a Proxy running on the same machine. But later when I reinstalled it the DB created problems.

I was really impressed with Perforce Support as they supported even after the contract expired long back.

Have you looked at the server log file - typically called log in the root
directory where the service is started.

Regards
