[p4] p4 triggers stops working with sldap auth-check trigger defined

I have set up an auth-check trigger which uses a java program to hit an
sldap server to authenticate the users and there passwords which works
great for P4Win. But when I login to the server and try command line p4
command a lot of them do not work anymore. like p4 triggers I get the
error :
Perforce password (P4PASSWD) invalid or unset.
and of course setting P4PASSWD or using the -P make no difference.
I am also using AntHillPro to do our builds and auto checking things out
of Perforce and I get the same error there.
How does the p4 command use the authentication trigger? The
documentation and the way we set it up is to get the password off of the
STDIN and we use %user% for the user - again it work fine to login to
P4Win but does not work for command line p4 commands.
I made sure the users were logged out - meaning no ticket existed while
the p4 command line was being used.
I can recover by deleting the db.triggers file - but that is defeating
the purpose.
What do I need to do to get this to work?
