[p4] How does Bitkeeper compare to Perforce?

If I were currently in the market for an SCM system and knew
something about Perforce, that document would have turned me
off of Bitkeeper. In fact, if I knew nothing about Perforce,
it would have sent me running to find out, just from the
tone of that piece.

As others have pointed out, it has a couple of valid points,
but a LOT of misrepresentation. That doesn't reflect well on
the quality of Bitkeeper, either as software or a company,
if it can't stand on its own merits against the competition.

For the record, in six years we've had zero Db issues, no
lost file content, and with the exception of one major
upgrade early on, upgrades are usually a matter of seconds,
two minutes tops.

Admin overhead is lost in the noise of my job 90% of the
time. (Doesn't add up to enough minutes a week for me to
make it a line item on my time report.) Sometimes I look
for things to change (or mess up :-) just to have something
to do.

When I was tasked with finding a replacement SCM system for
us, lo these many years ago, one thing I looked for was a
site that was high in solid technical information and low
in negative advertising copy. That's why I spent most of
the day reading everything on the Perforce site. Plus,
they were upfront about cost - none of this "Call our sales
department so one of our minions can come and weigh your
wallet" silliness.

Subject: [p4] How does Bitkeeper compare to Perforce?

Hi all,

I'm a happy Perforce user but recently the company I work for ran some
source control evaluation.

One person pointed me to this page:
http://www.bitkeeper.com/Comparisons.Perforce.html

I was surprised to some points in the document to say the least and I
was wondering if anyone here has anything to say about BitKeeper
compared to Perforce.

I looked on Perforce website for a comparison document but could not
find any. Posts on the mailing list are ether old or not greatly
addressing this question.

So, can anyone let me know more information about BitKeeper vs Perforce?

I would be happy to hear about some real production experiences too.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Jeremy
