[p4] Integrating file-type changes automatically?

I've considered it, but I've found that a good typemap and perhaps going
through and making sure everything has the right type right now hits the
vastly overwhelming majority of the need.

If I were to implement something, I would probably implement a trigger to
verify that type changes were propagated.

So have any of you investigated creating your own external solution? If
you have, and found it impossible or difficult or not worthwhile for
some reason, I'm keen to hear.

I assume you've all just been living with the awkward manual ways like
