One of Perforce's strengths is also unfortunately one of its weaknesses
with respect to Explorer integration. The fact that SVN and CVS store
metadata on the client side helps them with a more responsive Explorer
integration that is not subject to network flakiness. In all other
things, I consider keeping the metadata in the local file system to be
at best a design hack, an annoying intrusion on the source and build
tree, and a good way to subject your metadata to the additive failure
rates of all of your developer's workstations.
