[p4] Running perforce without a server process?

Is there any way to run perforce with a copy of p4d running?

I do some work on my (OSX) laptop where I'd like to have file
versioning. I know I could run p4d, but bringing servers up and down
on a laptop is an annoyance. This is especially true given that clean
system shutdowns on a laptop are rare.

SVN lets you create a repository in a local directory (using the file:///
syntax) with no server running. For the lightweight use I want on
my laptop, this is the right solution. RCS (am I showing my age?) and
CVS had similar functionality. Is there any way to do this with P4?
