[p4] What is "Show file state icons" supposed to do in Window s File Explorer?

In my experience, the P4 Explorer integration does not pay attention to
changes in environment made after is invoked (at boot time), so P4CONFIG,
'p4 set ...', and other changes to the environment are ineffective. The only
way I know of to change its effective client setting is via selecting a
client specification as "Default" in P4Win, so that it is decorated with the
red arrowhead to the lower left of the icon in the Clients view.

I have a global environment variable P4CONFIG set to ".p4env".  In the
root of the client view, I have a file named ".p4env" which defines the
P4CLIENT, P4PORT, P4USER, and P4PASSWD properties.  I tried to view
files in Windows Explorer in subdirectories of the client view root.  Is
there anything else I would have to have set up in order for this to
work?

	P4EXP won't know what client workspace it is unless you have a
P4CONFIG set or the P4CLIENT set in the environment or registry.

		By workspace, I assume you mean "client view".  This
client view has
		been "set up" for a long time now, and I've tried to
view numerous files
		in Windows Explorer that have been checked in for quite
a while, and it
		isn't showing anything in the file icons.
		
		  

			The icons will also not appear if your workspace
is 
			incorrectly formed. 
			   In particular, if your ROOT field in the
workspace is 
			formed with forward slashes instead of
backslashes (an easy 
			mistake for some to
			make) then the icon decorations won't show.
			    

		
		By the "ROOT field", do you mean the value that I
entered in the text
		box with the label "Restrict the Explorer plug-in to the
following
		folders. Type one path per line. Each line should begin
with a drive
		letter."?  When I saw this text box, I clicked the "Add
Client Root to
		Filter" button, and that inserted a correct backslash
path to the client
		root.
