Restore your old checkpoint with a newer p4d (yes, that is usually not
recommended). You will get an message like:
$ /home/perforce/20142/p4d -r . -z -jr
Perforce db files in '.' will be created if missing...
Recovering from /home/perforce/p4work/20111/checkpoint.27.gz...
Perforce server info:
Server version 38 is replaying a version 31
But disregard the message because you indeed are restoring an older database
with a newer p4d.
